Sour Cherry + Yellow Plum Galette

I make at least one galette every summer with the prettiest summer fruit I can find. This time I found sour cherries and little yellow plums. I use my favorite pâte brisée and I always make a double batch. An extra pie crust in the freezer is a beautiful thing. In an effort to not overwork the dough, I left some cracks in the dough and I had a major leak of all the wonderful juices. The galette still tasted delicious, but it’s tastier when the juices bubble up and get thick among the fruit. And cleaning up burnt fruit… Continue reading

Basil Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

Basil Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Recipe // @nicoledula #recipe

Basil and summer go together like pb&j. I’ve been putting basil in dressings + pesto + salad, but my food brain wanted more. When we were in Nashville we had a mini strawberry pie with anise ice cream at 5th and Taylor. I am typically not drawn to anise-flavored things, but that barely sweet strawberry pie with rich anise ice cream was a delight. And when I saw a recipe for basil chip ice cream in Bon Appétit, I felt like the anise-like flavors in the basil would be a similar treat. It’s creamy and sweet with the herbaceous basil and bitter dark chocolate… Continue reading

Vegan Chocolate-Dipped Avocado Popsicles

Vegan Chocolate-Dipped Avocado Popsicles Recipe // @nicoledula #popsicleweek

It’s popsicle week! That magical time of year when food bloggers show their undying love for this frozen treat. I can’t wait to see what everyone is making, so head over to Popsicle Prince Billy’s blog and check in all week for what’s new. And check out the official Pinterest board of popsicle week hosted by Munchie’s. I knew immediately what I wanted to make this year. I had to recreate my Las Paletas avocado popsicle with chocolate dip I had in Nashville. And because I couldn’t stop at the chocolate dip, I also sprinkled them with roasted pistachios and Maldon sea… Continue reading

Chocolate Olive Oil Loaf Cake with Coconut Milk

Chocolate Olive Oil Loaf Cake with Coconut Milk // @nicoledula

I’m back from 4 days in Louisville, KY and 2 days in Nashville, TN! There was cotton candy, modern art, sorghum, Mint Juleps, antique shops, beer, paletas, peaches, hot chicken, smoked ham and bourbon. So much smoked ham and bourbon. Did you follow along on Instagram? I did a bunch of research on where to go and more importantly, what to eat and everything just seemed to fall into place perfectly. I’ll tell you more about that soon, but first, chocolate loaf cake! I made this loaf cake, hoping for something big in chocolate flavor, moist from extra virgin olive… Continue reading

French Press Cold Brew Coffee with Vanilla Bean Coconut Milk Creamer

French Press Cold Brew Coffee with Vanilla Bean Coconut Milk Creamer Recipe // @nicoledula

I made my first gif! I hope you like it. And I made easy cold brew coffee and vanilla bean coconut milk creamer that you’ll want to drink all by itself. I just started drinking coffee, you guys. Even when going to coffee shops was the coolest thing in high school, I ordered hot chocolate. Then there was the famous incident when Marc and I were newlyweds and I ordered one of those sweet lattes piled high with whipped cream and I couldn’t sleep that night, so I started writing an autobiography. Marc still laughs about that one. Marc drinks… Continue reading

Vegan Raw Strawberry Crumble

Vegan Raw Strawberry Crumble Recipe // www.dulanotes.com @nicoledula

How was your weekend? I hope it was good! For the past few Easters, we’ve had dinner at a friend’s house. I plan the menu with our hostess, Nancy, digging through my Pinterest saves for recipes we can make. This year we decided on Mom’s deviled eggs (the guys go crazy for them), Cookie+Kate’s green goddess hummus, Bacon-wrapped pork loin, beet salad with whipped goat cheese + maple walnuts, green beans sprinkled with summer savory, spaetzle and chocolate cake with espresso + bourbon buttercream and crumbled chocolate cookies (!!!) We split the menu up and I spent the better part… Continue reading

Spiced Maple Stout Quick Bread

Spiced Maple Stout Quick Bread Recipe // www.dulanotes.com @nicoledula

I’m pretty sure all you need to know is that I sent one of these loaves to work with Marc and it was gone in a flash. Marc deserves a chunk of the credit, though, because he shared his “technique” for putting out my baked goods at work and getting people to partake. First of all, he tells me Mondays and Friday are good days to share because the company doesn’t offer any snacks on those days. He also sets out plates and napkins and attaches a sticky note to tell everyone what the treat is. This time he even… Continue reading

Cacao Nib Meringue Cookies

Cacao Nib Meringue Cookies Recipe // www.dulanotes.com @nicoledula

I’m always happy to have leftover egg whites from making tiramisu or ice cream or butterscotch pudding. It means I can make pretty little meringues. I treat myself to these beauties after making something rich with egg yolks, so clearly when Kate Hudson says a slim French woman taught her that a glass of red wine is her dessert, she will never understand me. And I will never have her abs. I haven’t been able to get these out of my mind, even after having more than my fair share of this batch. The bitter crunch of cacao nibs inside the… Continue reading

Almond Poppy Seed Bread with Blood Orange Glaze

Almond Poppy Seed Bread with Blood Orange Glaze Recipe // www.dulanotes.com @nicoledula

The sun is shining bright and reflecting off the snow. The temps are in the single digits. This morning I picked up paczki for Fat Tuesday and I made eye contact with an older gentleman getting out of his car dressed in striped knee socks and sporting serious bed-head that happily greeted me with a “Happy Paczki Day!” I had a lime curd cream-filled one with raspberry glaze that will be on my mind until next year. I can’t complain about today. If you’re having a lime curd cream-filled day like me or not, this almond poppy seed bread will make… Continue reading

Vegan Peanut Butter + Cacao Nib Granola Bars

Vegan Peanut Butter + Cacao Nib Granola Bars Recipe // www.dulanotes.com @nicoledula

The Sunday after Christmas, we drove from my mom and dad’s in west Michigan back home to celebrate with Marc’s family. We left pretty early and stopped at our favorite coffee shop Lemonjello’s. We ordered lattes and some freshly made energy bars. We loved the chewy texture and the hearty ingredients that tasted great and kept us full until lunch. After that first bite, I wanted to try making my own. I loaded these vegan, no-bake bars with all of our favorite things. There’s peanut butter, sliced almonds, cacao nibs, hemp seeds and coconut. They’re quick and easy to make, too. You’ll… Continue reading
