Food Adventure // Gold Cash Gold in Detroit, Michigan – Trip 2

Gold Cash Gold in Detroit, Michigan // @nicoledula #Detroit

You might remember that I already shared a great lunch we had at Gold Cash Gold in the spring during our Day Off in Detroit, but our recent visit was even better than the first. The light was dreamy and the dishes were gorgeous and it seemed a shame to just have these photos hanging out on my phone. I skipped lunch to properly prepare for this meal and started with Frida’s Blue House cocktail, inspired by the Frida Kahlo + Diego Rivera exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts. My girl, Megan has posted this pretty blue drink on Instagram before, so… Continue reading

Food Adventure // Gold Cash Gold in Detroit, Michigan

Gold Cash Gold Detroit // @nicoledula

For our day off in Detroit, I was secretly hoping we’d end up at Gold Cash Gold for a late lunch. I always make a little list of restaurants when adventuring because you never know what you’re in the mood for when the time comes. It seems like everyone has been talking about this restaurant since it opened. We arrived after the lunch crowd, but before the Friday dinner crowd and had the place to ourselves. You’re first struck by the sheer beauty of the place. The inner door is made from colorful stained glass. Wood and burlap elements accent the… Continue reading

Travel // Detroit Institute of Arts

The Detroit Institute of Arts // Dula Notes

There’s no way a few photos from my phone on a quick trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts will do it justice, but I’ll give you the express tour anyway. The Detroit Institute of Arts, or the DIA as we call it, is a beautiful place. The building itself is gorgeous and then it’s filled with masterpieces. Pictured above is the side entrance, but the front entrance is much more grand with huge steps. I suggest you go in that way for your first visit. The DIA has been in the local news lately because Kevyn Orr, Detroit’s emergency… Continue reading

Food Adventure // La Feria in Detroit, Michigan

La Feria in Detroit, Michigan // Dula Notes

New restaurants are popping up and thriving all over Detroit and La Feria’s promise of authentic Spanish tapas really got me excited. I put it on my mental list of places to visit asap. They opened in bustling Midtown Detroit back in November next to a new gelato place, Melt and my favorite Detroit shops, Nora, Hugh, Shinola, City Bird and Nest. It makes a nice destination for an afternoon of shopping and eating as long as it isn’t Monday, since most of the shops are closed on Monday. As we ate our meal, the word “fresh” continued to come… Continue reading

Food Adventure // Live, Love, Local Celebration 2012 in Detroit, Michigan

Last Saturday we attended the Live Love Local Celebration hosted by the Greening of Detroit and located at the Eastern Market. We were even able to go for free, thanks to tickets from my future sister-in-law, Meg! More than 25 restaurants were represented, with their chefs offering up small plates that used local food. The plan was to get to Eastern Market early and pretty much eat tacos for breakfast. I was ready to have my first food truck experience, well, besides the trucks and stands at carnivals and festivals. The El Guapo taco truck stops at Eastern Market at… Continue reading

Food Adventure // Detroit’s Eastern Market

In the previous post, I mentioned that I have been dying to go to the Detroit Eastern Market for years. After our Detroit Restaurant Week experience, we decided that once and for all, we must head to Eastern Market. The alarm went off at 5 a.m. and I was up right away from the excitement. Food nerd, much? YES! We unearthed two beach bags to carry our bounty and we were off. I could not believe the size of the market and the variety it offered. The top picture shows Grown-in-Detroit’s produce stand. Detroit’s economic woes are widely publicized, but… Continue reading

Food Adventure // Detroit Restaurant Week-The Rattlesnake Club

Detroit Restaurant Week // The Rattlesnake Club // Dula Notes

The Rattlesnake Club is the creation of Jimmy Schmidt, a pioneer of the farm-to-table movement. I had never heard of Jimmy before, but Googled him and learned that he studied electrical engineering in Illinois and went to France to earn credits in foreign language. As many others before him, he was lured into a culinary and wine career while in France. The restaurant is located in a beautiful spot of Detroit with large brick buildings and is situated next to the water. You can also get a glimpse of the Detroit skyline. The service is old-school and very professional. We thought… Continue reading

Food Adventure // Detroit Restaurant Week-24 Grille

We don’t go to Detroit nearly enough and Detroit Restaurant Week seemed to be the perfect excuse to go. Eighteen restaurants participated and created a reasonably priced pre-fixe tasting menu. I looked at the list and narrowed the choices down to six and then I had Marc take a look. We realized that we couldn’t choose just one and decided on 24 Grill at the Westin Book Cadillac hotel and The Rattlesnake Club in Rivertown. We had a wonderful time and I took lots of pictures with my iPhone for you! I tried fitting both restaurants into one post, but… Continue reading
