Zucchini Noodles with Puttanesca Sauce + 4th of July

Zucchini Noodles with Puttanesca Sauce Recipe // @nicoledula #whole30

These zucchini noodles with flavorful puttanesca was dinner for day 30 of whole 30 and it was delicious. I changed the original recipe quite a bit and thought you might like to try it. The puttanesca sauce is something I’ve never made before, but if you love olives and capers, it’s a real treat. The anchovies are optional, but they dissolve into the sauce and add an extra flavor. I was pleasantly surprised that the zucchini noodles made a pretty good substitute for pasta. I mean, it’s not pasta, but with a flavorful sauce, it’s a beautiful summer meal when… Continue reading

CSA 2015: Week 2 + Sausage with Onions, Peppers + Garlic Scapes

CSA 2015: Week 2 // @nicoledula

I’m eating fresh strawberries by the handful and loving it. The lettuce, kale and radishes are going into salads this week and the beets and beet greens will make the prettiest hot pink smoothies. I love putting garlic scapes on pizza, but we were still on whole 30, so I took a chance and added them to sausage and peppers and it was so good! I’ve included the easy recipe below if you want to make it for yourself. This week we received: avicenna butterhead lettuce, baby beets, garlic scapes, lacinato kale, French breakfast radishes and strawberries.

Shrimp Pacifico Lettuce Cups with Guacamole + Week 3 of Whole 30

Shrimp Pacifico Lettuce Cups with Guacamole Recipe // @nicoledula #whole30

Only one more week to go on whole 30! I can’t believe it. Sometimes it feels like forever, mostly when I think about ice cream, but has gone by quickly at the same time. I set out to take a closer look at what we’re eating, challenge myself to meals that don’t taste like we’re sacrificing anything and to hopefully find new healthy habits. Those things are happening and I’m happy to share the experience with you. I needed to share the recipe for these shrimp pacifico cups because it was one of our favorite meals. A summery recipe that takes… Continue reading

Frisée Salad with Mushrooms and Fried Eggs + Week 1 of Whole 30

Frisée Salad with Mushrooms and Fried Eggs + Starting Whole 30 // @nicoledula

If you normally roll your eyes at special diets, I feel you. I’m more of an “everything in moderation” person and I try to eat balanced meals while indulging occasionally, but I was feeling like things were a little off-balance for us lately. Maybe it was all the burgers + cookies + bourbon + biscuits + hot chicken in Louisville and Nashville?? I was following along with Erica’s Whole 30 experience and her beautiful and simple meals gave me the push I needed to try it for myself. If you’ve never heard of Whole 30, the rules are here. There is a… Continue reading

White Russian

White Russian Recipe // @nicoledula

Hey, I made another gif! This time to remind you of the decadent White Russian. You see, it made a comeback at the birthday party we recently threw for my Mom. Kahlua + Cream has always been her cocktail of choice, but we’d say, “What about a White Russian?” Her scrunched up face was the response. Marc tried to trick her and add a wee bit of vodka to her Kahlua and cream once, but she detected it immediately. Kahlua and Cream is a little sweet for us, but we do love a good White Russian. For the party, we… Continue reading

Greek Chicken Wraps

Greek Chicken Pita Wraps Recipe // @nicoledula

I made these Greek Chicken Wraps for Collaboreat and now I have the recipe here for you. I’m so pleased with how they turned out and then Melissa made them and sent me the sweetest Instagram message to say her family loved them. How lovely is that? Here’s the story behind this recipe and why it’s a big part of my first memories of Detroit. To someone who isn’t from metro Detroit, Greek Chicken Wraps might seem like a strange meal to associate with the area. Detroit’s diverse melting pot of cultures and love of greasy spoons has filled the area with diners featuring menus with… Continue reading

French Press Cold Brew Coffee with Vanilla Bean Coconut Milk Creamer

French Press Cold Brew Coffee with Vanilla Bean Coconut Milk Creamer Recipe // @nicoledula

I made my first gif! I hope you like it. And I made easy cold brew coffee and vanilla bean coconut milk creamer that you’ll want to drink all by itself. I just started drinking coffee, you guys. Even when going to coffee shops was the coolest thing in high school, I ordered hot chocolate. Then there was the famous incident when Marc and I were newlyweds and I ordered one of those sweet lattes piled high with whipped cream and I couldn’t sleep that night, so I started writing an autobiography. Marc still laughs about that one. Marc drinks… Continue reading

Vegan Raw Strawberry Crumble

Vegan Raw Strawberry Crumble Recipe // www.dulanotes.com @nicoledula

How was your weekend? I hope it was good! For the past few Easters, we’ve had dinner at a friend’s house. I plan the menu with our hostess, Nancy, digging through my Pinterest saves for recipes we can make. This year we decided on Mom’s deviled eggs (the guys go crazy for them), Cookie+Kate’s green goddess hummus, Bacon-wrapped pork loin, beet salad with whipped goat cheese + maple walnuts, green beans sprinkled with summer savory, spaetzle and chocolate cake with espresso + bourbon buttercream and crumbled chocolate cookies (!!!) We split the menu up and I spent the better part… Continue reading

Miso-Parmesan Shishito Peppers

Miso-Parmesan Shishito Peppers Recipe // www.dulanotes.com @nicoeldula

Today a group of bloggers are celebrating Emily of The Pig & Quill’s virtual baby shower! She’s having a little girl and we’re celebrating the best way we know how, with delicious food. Emily is a food maven who creates the most unique recipes and I thought she might appreciate this umami-rich appetizer. Our Trader Joe’s just started carrying shishito peppers and I’m already on my 4th bag. They are perfect simply blistered in a skillet of shimmering olive oil and finished with flaky sea salt, but sometimes you want to mix it up. Especially if you’re trying to impress a… Continue reading

Raspberry White Chocolate Scones

Raspberry White Chocolate Scones Recipe // www.dulanotes.com @nicoledula

When the farmers market is open, often I’ll treat us to a raspberry white chocolate scone on Saturday mornings. They’re sweet, but not too sweet and perfect for a quick breakfast before washing the veggies that came from the market. I’ve always wanted to make my own version and I’ve finally done it. These are actually not very similar to the scones I get at the farmers market, which are more like a drop scone with trails of raspberry making the dough a touch blue. I saw this technique of rolling the scones over at The Vanilla Bean Blog, a method America’s… Continue reading
