I’ve wanted to share this with you for years, but just never had the photo evidence. Since 2008, I have been going to AMC Theater’s Best Picture Showcase. You buy your ticket and on the day of the event they hand you a lanyard to get in and out of the theater and a booklet with the synopsis of each film. To see if an AMC theater near you participates, go online after the Oscar nominations are announced.
That first year, only 5 films were nominated for best picture and the all-day movie event was the Saturday before the Oscars. I was instantly hooked. The academy has since started nominating 9-10 films each year and therefore breaking the marathon into a 2-Saturday event that takes place the two Saturdays before the Oscars. There is also a 24 hour marathon for the really dedicated movie fans.
In 2008 Michael Clayton, Juno, There Will Be Blood, Atonement and No Country For Old Men were all up for best picture and it was a good year for movies. Included with the price of our ticket, was a free large popcorn with unlimited refills. Marc and I were excited to be grown-ups that could eat popcorn for breakfast, but we learned the hard way that man/woman cannot live on popcorn alone.
The theater told us in 2008 that we could bring in our own snacks and since then I’ve stepped up my preparations for movie marathon snacking. Trying to anticipate every sweet and salty craving and most importantly, having some healthy snacks on-hand. I learned about myself that when I’m surrounded by junk food, all I want is veggies and fruit and trail mix.
Marc reminded me a few times that I went overboard this year, but really, it’s not cool when you’re stuck in a theater for 11-12 hours with a craving for something you can’t have. This year I chopped up bell peppers and carrots, peeled some cara cara oranges, brought hummus, peanut butter pretzels, pita chips, trail mix, cheddar bunnies, raisin rosemary crackers, MINI EGGS and blood orange San Pellegrino.
I also bought these delicious ginger chews for the movie marathon and proceeded to have a few every day until the bag was empty. Womp womp. If you like ginger, you should seek these out. I’ve found them at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.
Last Saturday we watched Philomena, Dallas Buyers Club, Wolf of Wall Street and 12 Years a Slave. Philomena and Dallas Buyers Club were my favorites for their unique and engrossing stories. I think Jared Leto is getting best supporting actor because wow, he was incredible. Just yesterday we watched Nebraska, Captain Phillips, Her, American Hustle and Gravity. Nebraska and Her were my two favorites from the group. Will Forte was surprisingly perfect in Nebraska. Her was visually the best film of the year with a colorful, retro-futuristic interpretation of the future.
