Mexican Street Corn Salad

Mexican Street Corn Salad Recipe // Dula Notes

Cobs of slightly charred corn with a slathering of this and a dusting of that, have been on my must-try list for a while now.  Right now I am picturing beautiful Mexican street corn with lime wedges on the side. A lovely thought indeed. When summer comes, though,  I stick to a simple grilled preparation with no additions to my summer sweet corn. I can’t explain why, but the thought of it as a salad motivated me to finally give the flavor combination a try. I think you should make this. The colors are vibrant and it just looks like… Continue reading

Grilled Pork Banh Mi Party // Celebrating the 4th of July

Last Tuesday I started to tell you about my whirlwind of a 4th of July. It was busy, but packed with the best kind of summer fun. My brother and sister-in-law drove to our house on the 3rd and we started the holiday with a Banh Mi party. I had the day off and cut carrots and cucumbers into matchsticks and picked cilantro leaves from their stems. I sliced fresh baguette into sandwich-sized portions. The pork tenderloin was thinly sliced, marinated, skewered and destined for the grill. It rained all day, but the sun arrived with our guests. After a… Continue reading

Fennel and Chili Grilled Pork Loin with Chive Blossom Vinegar

Fennel and Chili Grilled Pork Loin with Chive Blossom Vinegar Recipe // Dula Notes

A few years ago we started a Mother’s Day tradition where we have our families over for a Sunday afternoon barbecue. It was Marc’s idea and the first year we did it, Mother’s Day was the same weekend that I was hosting a bridal shower for my brother and  sister-in-law. The kind where I was making bacon waffles for 40 people. Marc saw the panic in my eyes and told me he would take care of everything. He was going to have the guys chip in for this dinner and let the girls just enjoy themselves. Marc adorably created the menu… Continue reading

Lavender Sea Salt Steaks for Two

Lavender Sea Salt Steaks // Dula Notes

I’m so indecisive when it comes to plans for Valentine’s Day. There are many restaurants that we love or would love to try, but I can’t take the crowds. We are totally that couple that is secretly 80 years old inside and enjoys week night dining to evade the crowds. One Valentine’s Day we went to one of our favorite seafood restaurants and were seated next to a chain-smoking couple in a packed restaurant at the tiniest table for two. We had to give our waitress the salt and pepper shakers because we just couldn’t spare the room. I think… Continue reading

Grilled Babyback Ribs

Charcoal-Grilled Babyback Ribs Recipe // @nicoledula

I’ve been holding out on you, big time. I have made these ribs 4 or 5 times and I am just now sharing. The only excuse I have is that I try to strike a balance between documenting every great meal and also sitting back and enjoying food with friends and family. Did you have a nice weekend? My parents spent Memorial Day weekend with us and we had a grand time. Dad and I went to the farmer’s market on Saturday and picked up orange dahlias to plant and these meaty ribs from the German butcher down the road.… Continue reading

Salt and Vinegar Potatoes

Salt and Vinegar Potatoes Recipe // Dula Notes

I know people are starting to make heavenly spiced desserts now that fall is almost here, but I’m still grilling and I have to share. My Mom has long been a fan of salt and vinegar chips. They were a special treat when we were kids and we all knew they were Mom’s favorite. Being a fan myself, this recipe was intriguing with its short list of ingredients, easy preparation and promise of great deliciousness. Try these on your grill or use your favorite skillet for making these indoors. The zing of vinegar soaks into the potatoes and I love… Continue reading

Grilled Corn Salad

I first discovered this grilled corn salad last labor day and it just tastes like summer. The corn is nutty from the grill, the fresh vegetables are crisp and the easy lime dressing adds a tangy sweetness. Now that summer is here and the barbecue is getting fired up regularly, I’ve made this twice already. Sometimes I have trouble finding a side dish that will please everyone, but this is great for that purpose. My husband loves this salad, even though he doesn’t care for cilantro and red onion. I’ve made it for my parents, brother, sister-in-law and recently for… Continue reading

Smoke-Roasted Leg of Lamb Provencal

On Easter we decided to go low-key and have a nice grilled meal for the two of us. The unpredictable Michigan weather was kind to us and cooperated with a slightly cool, but sunny Sunday afternoon. We sat on our porch and enjoyed some cocktails while we waited for the lamb to cook. It was a bit of heaven on earth. Recipe: Smoke-Roasted Leg of Lamb Provencal Recipe from Steven Raichlen We made an almost 3 lb. boneless leg of lamb and we halved the ingredients below. We cooked the lamb for about 50 minutes. If you’re wondering why the… Continue reading

The Perfect Weeknight Meal

We had a pricey post-anniversary celebration at Ocean Prime the other night and after we paid the bill, we decided to go to the freezer and pantry for the rest of the week. The food was fresh and good, the service was quite fantastic, but I thought it was a bit overpriced for what we had. Each entree comes with a vegetable, but our server explained it was more of “an extension of the garnish” than an actual side. Sigh. Oh, and did I mention that an older lady at the table next to us smoked Virginia Slims all over… Continue reading
