It’s a rainy day in Michigan, but the air smells fresh and the grass is growing green. The duck couple that returns every spring has started waddling around our yard. Mr. Duck has the prettiest emerald green feathers that cover his head and Mrs. Duck is neutral in brown speckled feathers, save for one colorful patch of cobalt blue feathers on her side.

I still remember when I met the duck couple. The first year in our home we had to clean up a yard that had been neglected for a while. We had garden beds filled with weeds and a pile of mulch on our patio that had started to sprout tiny trees. We raked and pulled until we were covered in dirt and had an army of full yard waste bags. I saw an egg among the yard waste and for some reason SNAKE EGG came to my mind. Not knowing what to do, I left it in the yard waste. A few days later we saw the duck couple slowly waddling around the house. I still feel kind of bad about that.

One early morning last week, Marc saw the duck couple perched on the highest peak of our neighbor’s roof. I like to think that they have old married couple converstaions.

Besides the duck couple, spring brings back some beautiful produce. I wanted to eat something spring-like and spring pizza was on my mind. While we were eating this pizza I asked Marc, “Doesn’t this pizza taste like spring?!” He humored me with an “I guess?” But really, it does! A little bit of tangy goat cheese mixed with creamy mozzarella pairs well with the green asparagus, mild spring onion and sweet tomatoes. I wanted to put a couple of eggs on top of this pizza, but it was too pretty to cover up. I support your decision to put an egg on it, though.

  1. AWW, duckies. I don’t blame you for your reaction to the egg. Serious snake phobia over here–I don’t know what I would have done!

    I DO know what I would do around this pizza, though: demolish at least half of it immediately. So much good spring stuff, plus goat cheese? I’m in.

    • I never see snakes around here, so I have no idea why my brain went there! I’m making another one of these tonight and I’m pretty excited about it 🙂

  2. Aw, so sweet about the duck couple! I do love the sound of this pizza – very spring-like indeed. I used to make pizza almost once a week, but I’ve lost the habit. Must get back into it and this could be the pizza to make it happen 🙂

  3. I adore spring produce, it keeps me at the market. These pizza looks so good. I have this thing about cherry tomatoes, they should be added to everything. 🙂

    • Agreed! I usually pop a few in my mouth as I’m washing them, too. Those sweet little devils 🙂

  6. I’m always wary of seeing snakes in yard clean-up…and anything else creepy-crawly.
